Essential for Your Body. And Now Available at Hormonally Balanced.

Why Is Vitamin B12 Essential for Your Body?

Vitamin B12 is vital to the proper functioning of your nervous system, including your brain. Every cell in your body relies on B12 for its metabolism, helping you to produce energy. Even DNA synthesis needs vitamin B12 to occur in a healthy way.

Vitamin B12 also plays a key role in the development of red blood cells (hemoglobin). Without it, your blood can’t transmit oxygen to your cells properly. If you don’t have enough B12, you can develop anemia, leading you to feel weak and exhausted.

The Benefits of Vitamin B12 Injections

  • Reduction in number and severity of headaches
  • Reduced reaction to allergy attacks
  • Increased metabolism, which results in weight loss for many
  • Improved sleep duration and quality
  • Better ability to concentrate
  • Boosted mood
  • Higher energy levels
  • Support with prevention of diabetic neuropathy
  • Decreased sense of stress
  • Reduced depression
  • Improved immune system support
  • Reduced risk of dementia and cognitive decline for some older people
  • Reduced levels of fatigue

Who’s Most Likely to Need a Vitamin B12 Injection?

Anyone can find themselves low on vitamin B12. Because there are no adverse effects from taking in excess B12, many people also find that a vitamin B12 injection helps them enjoy improved energy levels.

Certain groups are more likely to suffer from B12 deficiency. Because vitamin B12 comes largely from animal products in the diet, vegetarians and vegans often find themselves deficient in B12. In addition, those with various conditions, including ALS, diabetes, and muscular dystrophy, are likely to experience vitamin B12 deficiency.

In addition, many people just don’t absorb vitamin B12 well. This is likely to occur with people who have intestinal conditions such as celiac disease or Crohn’s disease. As you age, your stomach decreases its production of gastric acid, which inhibits the release of B12 from ingested proteins, so taking supplemental vitamin B12 can become more important for older individuals.

Some people are more at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency than others. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, there’s a 90% chance that you’re not getting enough B12 from your diet.

Others simply don’t absorb vitamin B12 well. During digestion, a glycoprotein known as intrinsic factor helps absorb B12 into the blood. If your body doesn’t generate enough intrinsic factor naturally, you’re at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency and the problems that come with it, including anemia and issues of the nervous system. People who have had intestinal surgery or diseases are also at risk.

Our physician will help determine how often you need regular vitamin B12 injections. Some people take them once a month, where others benefit from them weekly or every other week. The effects of each shot can last from several days to a few weeks.

Low energy is one of the key signs of vitamin B12 deficiency. If you’ve been experiencing fatigue or lethargy, it’s a good idea to have your B12 levels checked.

Other symptoms that may point to vitamin B12 deficiency include:

  • Vertigo or feeling faint
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • A swollen, discolored, or sore tongue or other mouth sores
  • Depressed mood
  • Constipation
  • Numbness (pins and needles) in hands or feet
  • Memory and concentration issues
  • Changes in your vision
  • Loss of appetite
  • Blood clots
  • Stroke
  • Breast cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Gallbladder disease

In addition to the above risk factors, the ability to absorb vitamin B12 tends to lessen with age. Vitamin B12 deficiency is so common that 85% of older people fail to get enough of this vital vitamin from their diet.

And remember intrinsic factor? This protein needed to absorb B12 diminishes so greatly with age that physicians work under the assumption that no one over the age of 70 is able to produce it naturally any longer.

There Are Only Two Ways to Get Vitamin B12

Your body doesn’t make vitamin B12 on its own. You can only get adequate amounts of vitamin B12 two ways: through your food or through supplements.

Vitamin B12 is available mostly through animal-based foods, where it binds to proteins. (That’s why vegetarians and vegans are typically deficient in B12). High levels of B12 are especially available in certain organ meats, in beef and lamb, in certain fish, and in dairy products.

However, if your body is unable to absorb ingested vitamin B12 well, eating these foods may not get you the levels of B12 that you need. That’s also true of oral supplements, which also have to be absorbed through the stomach and intestinal tract. If you have any condition that prevents you from proper absorption of B12, you can’t rely on oral supplements to supply what you need.

That’s why scientists developed an injectable form of vitamin B12. When you inject this important vitamin, it goes straight into your bloodstream, delivering the needed B12 directly to your tissues, so you get the full, sustained effect of the vitamin.
